Capital Vision Care Southgate is inside Southgate Centre, steps from the Southgate LRT station, which makes it an easy trip from the University area, Old Strathcona or anywhere along the Capital Line. The clinic cares for university students, young families and longtime patients, and is open until 8 PM Monday to Thursday.
Eight optometrists practise here, including Dr. Allec Fayad, Dr. Riley LeBlanc and Dr. Ruby Mangat, and eye exams are offered in English, Arabic, Spanish, Punjabi and Hindi.
Services include comprehensive and children's eye exams, myopia management, dry eye treatment, contact lens fittings and same-day care for sudden eye problems. I have been to a lot of different optical places over the years to buy my prescription glasses. Capital Vision Care has been phenomenal, by far compared to the others. My optician, Gabby, was absolutely fantastic. I dread picking out frames, and she made the entire experience very pleasant, very positive and effortless. She helped me choose the best frames for my face, my lifestyle and for how they felt on my face! She is incredible,and I highly recommend her if you find shopping for frames challenging! A screw fell out of my frame,and Gabby fixed the frame,with a smile. Capital Vision Care has a great selection,and my optician's recommendations for lenses,frames,everything was phenomenal. I'll definitely go back when I need a new prescription!👓
I had an excellent experience at Capital Vision Care. Dr. Ruby Mangat was thorough, caring, knowledgeable, and took the time to answer my questions. I felt listened to and well cared for throughout my appointment, which gave me a lot of confidence in the care I received. I would also like to recognize Brandon for his outstanding customer service. He helped me choose a pair of prescription sunglasses, and I couldn’t be happier with them. He was friendly, thoughtful, patient, and fun to work with. He took the time to help me find a pair that suited me well, and his guidance made the process easy and enjoyable. I absolutely love my new sunglasses. The color is beautiful, they fit perfectly, and I love how they look on me. Brandon helped me find a pair that feels both comfortable and stylish, and I am so pleased with the result. The entire experience was professional, welcoming, and stress-free. I truly appreciated the kindness, expertise, and attention I received from both Dr. Mangat and Brandon. I have been getting eye exams here for many years. I appreciate the technology used to keep track of my eye health. I recently had an eye hygiene appointment with Megan. I wasn't sure how much she would be able to help with my dryness issues, but she had great advice and I've had considerable improvement with a few new supplies and processes. Definitely worth doing and good value for the cost.
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received when collecting my glasses. The individual assisting me did not dedicate sufficient time to properly adjust my eyewear, which was quite disappointing. However, I would like to commend Lazaros for his exceptional service during both the initial order placement and a subsequent visit for adjustments. His professionalism and helpfulness were greatly appreciated, and this five-star rating is a direct reflection of his outstanding contributions.

Questions patients ask
Do I need a referral for an eye exam?
No. You can book directly with Capital Vision Care Southgate for a routine eye exam, a contact lens exam, a dry eye concern or many urgent eye concerns. Book online or call (780) 437-2520.
What does a comprehensive eye exam include?
It may include a health and vision history, prescription testing, eye pressure screening, retinal imaging, focusing and eye coordination checks, and a detailed look at the front and back of your eyes. Most exams take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the testing needed, whether dilation is required, and whether you are also being fitted for glasses or contacts.
Does Alberta Health Care cover eye exams?
Alberta Health Care (AHCIP) insures one routine eye exam per benefit year for children under 19 and seniors 65 and older. Since February 1, 2025 those exams are only partially covered, so a co-pay applies. Routine exams for adults 19 to 64 are not covered by AHCIP, though many extended health plans cover them.
Do you bill my insurance directly?
Yes. Capital Vision Care direct bills most major insurers, including Alberta Blue Cross, ASEBP, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Medavie, Quikcard and AUPE, along with many other private and employer plans.
Can I be seen for an eye emergency?
Yes. Same-day appointments are available for sudden eye pain, redness or vision changes, so you do not need to wait in the ER. The optometrists assess, diagnose and treat many urgent eye problems and can prescribe medication. For a chemical burn, a penetrating eye injury, sudden complete loss of vision or severe trauma, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Is there parking, and is the clinic accessible?
Free on-site patient parking, with accessible stalls close to the entrance. The clinic is wheelchair accessible, with a barrier-free exam room. Eye exams are offered in English, Arabic, Spanish, Punjabi and Hindi.
When should my child have their first eye exam?
Children should have their first eye exam between 6 and 9 months, at least one exam between ages 2 and 5, and an exam every year from ages 6 to 19.
