When Canada’s Walk-In Clinics Are Actually Open
Every guide to Canadian healthcare says walk-in clinics are open evenings and weekends. We read the published hours of 22,735 providers. Only 3.1% are open at 8pm on a Wednesday, and 58% shut for the entire weekend.
Almost every page on the internet that explains walk-in clinics to Canadians says some version of the same sentence: many are open evenings and weekends. Health authorities say it, universities say it, clinic websites say it. Nobody appears to have checked it.
We can, because we hold the opening hours for 22,735 Canadian clinics, pharmacies and urgent care centres. Read against the clock, the sentence does not survive. A walk-in clinic in Canada is overwhelmingly a weekday daytime service that closes at about the same time as the office job that stopped you visiting during the day.

The evening is thinner than the phrase suggests
35.2% of walk-in clinics stay open past 6pm on at least one weekday. That is the number that makes "open evenings" defensible, and it is doing a lot of work, because "at least one weekday" can mean a single late night on a Tuesday.
Ask the question the way a patient experiences it, on one particular evening, and it collapses. Only 3.1% of walk-in clinics are open at 8pm on a Wednesday. Fewer than 13% stay open past 8pm on any night of the week.
Put differently: of the 8 categories of care we measured, walk-in clinics come last for evening opening. Behind dentists. Behind chiropractors. The service designed for people who cannot book an appointment keeps shorter evening hours than the services that only take appointments.

"Open past 6pm" counts a provider that closes at or after 6pm on at least one weekday. Saturday and Sunday count any published hours on that day.
The weekend cliff
58% of walk-in clinics are closed on both Saturday and Sunday. Not reduced hours, not appointment only. Closed.
Saturday holds up reasonably well at 41.3%. Sunday is where the system runs out: 15.4% of walk-in clinics list any Sunday hours, and 13.4% are actually open at 10am on a Sunday morning. For a country whose standard advice for a non-emergency is "go to a walk-in clinic instead of the emergency room", roughly one clinic in 7 is available to take that advice on a Sunday morning.

Urgent care covers the gap, where it exists
Urgent care centres are the one category built for this problem, and the hours show it: 81.9% open past 6pm, 63.7% are open at 8pm on a Wednesday, and 81.6% open on Saturday. On availability alone they behave like a different kind of institution.
The catch is arithmetic. There are 1,010 urgent care centres on ClinicFinder against 3,452 walk-in clinics, and they are concentrated in and around larger cities. For most of the country, urgent care is not an option that exists at 8pm. It is an option that exists in another city.
Even urgent care thins out on Sunday, to 50.0%.
Pharmacies are the real after-hours network
The most available health service in Canada after 6pm is not a clinic. 83.3% of pharmacies stay open past 6pm, 87.0% open on Saturday and 35.2% on Sunday, which is more Sunday coverage than walk-in clinics and urgent care put together.
That matters more than it used to. Pharmacists in most provinces can now assess and prescribe for a defined list of minor ailments, which covers a real share of what sends people to a walk-in clinic in the first place. Ontario became the ninth province to allow it in January 2023 and expanded its list to 28 conditions in July 2026. The scope varies by province, so it is worth checking what yours allows before you need it: the Canadian Pharmacists Association keeps a province-by-province summary.

Ontario has the widest Sunday walk-in coverage at 21.9%; New Brunswick the narrowest at 2.2%. Every province in the table is below 25%.

What to do at 9pm on a Sunday
The practical order, given what the hours actually say:
- Check what is open right now, not what is nearby. Filter by the day and time you need rather than by distance. A clinic ten minutes further away that is actually open beats a closer one that shut at five.
- Try a pharmacy first for a minor ailment. They keep the longest hours of any category here, and in most provinces a pharmacist can assess and prescribe for common complaints without an appointment.
- Call your province's health line. Free, staffed around the clock by a registered nurse, and the fastest way to find out whether what you have can wait until morning. 811 in most of Canada.
- Check for urgent care before the emergency room. If one exists in your area it is likely to be open when clinics are not.
- Call ahead, even when the hours look right. Walk-in clinics routinely close their queue before their posted closing time.
ClinicFinder lists 22,735 providers with published hours, and every city has pages for walk-in clinics filtered by Sunday, Saturday, late and 24 hour availability.
Method and limitations
Figures cover the 22,735 visible listings on ClinicFinder.ca that publish at least one usable opening range, out of 28,370 listings in total. Hours come from the providers' own published schedules by way of Google Business Profiles, provincial registries and direct submissions from clinic owners. Categories with fewer than 100 qualifying providers are excluded, provinces below 40 and cities below 30. Every figure on this page is generated from the dataset when the site is built.
Four limits are worth stating plainly.
Published hours are not observed hours. This measures what providers say they do. Clinics close their queues early, cancel evening shifts when a physician is unavailable, and forget to update a profile for months. The real availability is almost certainly worse than what is reported here, not better.
Statutory holidays are not modelled. A clinic that opens on Sundays may still close on a long weekend, and the day most people need a walk-in clinic is exactly the day the schedule does not describe.
Providers without published hours are excluded, not counted as closed. 19.9% of listings publish no usable hours. If anything this flatters the results, since a clinic that does not publish hours is unlikely to be running an extensive evening service.
These are shares, not counts. We deliberately report the percentage of listed clinics open at a given time rather than clinics per capita. Counts in this dataset reflect how completely we have catalogued a region; shares do not, because coverage affects the numerator and denominator equally.
Sources. Opening hours and business details come from Google Maps business listings and clinic submissions. Facility records are compiled from Statistics Canada's Open Database of Healthcare Facilities, OpenStreetMap and provincial health registries. The one claim on this page that does not come from our own data is the scope of pharmacist prescribing, which is drawn from the Canadian Pharmacists Association.

15.4% of walk-in clinics list any Sunday hours, and 13.4% are open at 10am on a Sunday. Sunday is the thinnest day of the week for walk-in care almost everywhere in Canada.
What is open when the walk-in clinics are closed?
Three things, in order of how widely available they are. Pharmacies: 83% stay open past 6pm and 35% open on Sunday, and pharmacists in most provinces can now assess and prescribe for a list of minor ailments. Urgent care centres: 64% are open at 8pm on a weeknight, but there are only 1,010 of them nationally. Then the hospital emergency department, which is the fallback the other two exist to prevent.
Why do clinic hours listed online so often turn out to be wrong?
Published hours are a schedule, not a promise. Walk-in clinics commonly stop accepting new patients before their posted closing time, once the queue is long enough to fill the remaining hours. A clinic listed until 8pm may take its last patient at 6:30pm. Calling ahead is worth the two minutes.
